When Dhruv Bhagtani landed in Australia thanks to a prestigious Future Research Talent Award, he knew he’d be doing world-class undergraduate research. What he didn’t expect was the world of opportunity it also opened up.

"Nine years ago, my family and I fled war in Sri Lanka. We travelled to Australia by boat and spent months living in detention centres before settling in Brisbane, where I finished my high-school education with dreams of attending university."

To mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the joint conveners of ANU Women* in Physics, Astro and Engineering, Dr Noemie Bastidon and Dr Julie Tournet, were in conversation with ANU alumni Professor Melanie Campbell from the University of Waterloo.

Himani came to ANU from India to pursue a PhD with the Mathematical Sciences Institute, focusing on operator theory.

The tradition of burning their PhD thesis has been handed down from student to student at Mount Stromlo ever since the 2003 bushfires.

Graduating with a Master of Earth Sciences (Advanced), Hangyu Meng came to ANU to pursue his curiosity about how the world works and to develop his research skills with the hope of continuing his studies with a PhD.

Isaac Kozlovskis is studying a Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Science. As part of his studies, he completed an internship at the Australian Academy of Science.

Solene Chretien is studying a Bachelor of Environment & Sustainability / Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics. As part of her studies, she completed an internship with Stop Food Waste Australia.
