Every time rain falls it captures a little bit of history. Standing as magnificent remnants of Indonesia's monsoonal past, PhD student at the Research School of Earth Sciences, Claire Krause studies stalagmites from the caves of Sulawesi.

After completing a degree in Adelaide, and getting some practical experience in the forest industry, Martyn is now completing a Bachelor of Science majoring in forestry.

"Think about the impact you can have on the quality of the world we share." That’s the advice that Ramana Kumar gives to new students. Ramana studied the Bachelor of Philosophy at ANU and is now completing a PhD at Cambridge University.

"I always loved astronomy - I don’t remember a time when I didn’t!" says Raquel Salmeron. But Raquel’s path to the stars wasn’t direct. One of her earliest memories of astronomy was of her mother reading her a story that mentioned the Planet Earth. Raquel remembers pondering the concepts of a planet and the Sun, and her life long curiosity was piqued.

My advice to those thinking about a career in science is to go for it.

Being a graduate student at ANU has opened a plethora of opportunities that one can only fathom if one experiences it personally.

"Science just clicked with me and I wanted to do it my entire life," says Phoebe Benson, who studies the Bachelor of Philosophy (PhB). Phoebe is finding that the PhB gives her the opportunity to sink her teeth into some very interesting research. "The PhB gives you access to real research. I am doing some bio technology work at the moment, manipulating genes in a plasma. I have done some other work previously with the malaria parasite as well. The PhB gives you the opportunity to really expand your knowledge in how to conduct scientific research."

Tess has also discovered ANU provides a lot of options outside the academic world.
