Master of Astronomy & Astrophysics(Advanced)


Discover everything there is to know about galaxies, cosmos, the universe and beyond. Use a combination of classic and modern research techniques to lay the groundwork for the concepts needed for the exploration of space.

Coursework will include key areas such as cosmology, astrophysics, gas dynamics and robotics. Many of the courses incorporate hands-on and field-based activities between our two campuses: Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatory.

You will also undertake a research project supervised by an ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics academic.

You will develop your skills and knowledge in the latest advances in astronomy and astrophysics with our world-leading academics and unique facilities.

Program details

The Master of Astronomy and Astrophysics (Advanced) offers a variety of courses covering astronomy and astrophysics, earth and marine science, physics, mathematics, and computer science.

This two year degree program balances coursework studies alongside a significant research project supervised by an academic, and is a gateway to further research, such as a PhD.

Christian's research areas are in wide-field sky surveys, object classification and photometric redshift estimation, galaxy evolution through cosmic epochs and via environmental influence, supernovae and GRBs.

Understand the entry requirements

Gather supporting documents

If you graduated from an Australian university, UAC will be able to access your results in most cases. However, you may be asked to provide transcripts or other documentation, so it is a good idea to prepare your records just in case.

You can still apply before you complete your Bachelor Degree if you are in your final year, and you must advise UAC in your application. You may need to provide a copy of your academic transcript directly to UAC as soon as you complete your degree. UAC will provide instructions during the application process.

Submit an application

You will need to submit your application through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).

Receive an offer

All offers are made through UAC and are released on a rolling basis. You can access your offers and correspondence by logging into your UAC account.

Once you receive an offer it is very important that you accept it to ensure your place at ANU is reserved.
