Ishfahani Rusyda is studying a Master of Science in Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics

What were you doing before you commenced your postgraduate qualifications at ANU?

Before ANU, I completed my undergraduate degree in Physics at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia, where I focused on theoretical cosmology research. This research sparked my interest in the broader field of astronomy, which motivated me to pursue it for my master’s.

What do you enjoy doing with your free time?

I enjoy listening to music, going for walks, and socializing with friends. I cherish the moments spent with friends, whether we’re catching up over coffee or exploring new places together.

Why did you choose ANU?

The ANU Stromlo Observatory has a vibrant community of astrophysicists and outstanding researchers across various astronomy topics. I was particularly drawn to the ANU researcher contributions to the discovery of the accelerating universe, and I am excited to be part of a research group that continues this important work.

What do you like most about your student experience so far:

I love astronomy, and studying alongside great researchers has been my best experience so far. The university creates a great atmosphere for focusing on our studies, and I enjoy the supportive community among students.

What opportunities have been made available to you during your degree?

As part of Stromlo, I have the opportunity to attend weekly talks from leading researchers around the world, which has opened my eyes to the latest developments in the field.

What extracurricular activities did you participate in at ANU?

I am a member of the Indonesian Student Association at ANU and also participate in Gamelan Sedulur Monco, a community dedicated to learning and playing gamelan (Indonesian traditional music instrument) in Canberra.

Did you receive any prizes/scholarships while studying at ANU?

I am an awardee of the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), which provides me with a full scholarship to pursue my master’s degree.

What's next after you complete your study?

I love doing research, so I am seeking a PhD! After that, I plan to return to Indonesia to become a researcher.

What is your favourite thing about living in Canberra?

I love that Canberra is peaceful and offers beautiful views. The city’s parks and nature reserves provide a perfect backdrop for outdoor activities, whether it’s a leisurely walk, a picnic, or simply enjoying the scenery. Whenever I need to recharge, I can easily find a great place to relax, allowing me to clear my mind.

This time next year, where do you see yourself?

I see myself finalizing my master’s thesis and preparing for my final presentation while also applying for PhD positions.

Any advice for future students?

Always remember to bring your jacket everywhere; Canberra’s winds can be chilly, even on sunny days.
