Jade Suaesi is pursuing a Master of Science Communication postgraduate degree at the Centre for the Public Awareness of Science.

What were you doing before you commenced your postgraduate qualifications at ANU?

Before beginning my studies at ANU, I completed a postgraduate diploma in agricultural crop science and worked with IMAGINE Science Samoa, focusing on science communication initiatives.

Why did you choose ANU?

I chose ANU because it came highly recommended by friends familiar with my passion for science communication. I was also attracted to the potential impact this degree could have on my work in Samoa, particularly in advancing science awareness and education within my community

What professional development opportunities have you had at ANU?

At ANU, I have had the opportunity to work on meaningful projects, including creating an Online English-Samoan Science Dictionary. I also developed a Microscope Exhibit Evaluation report for Questacon and wrote a Climate Change Show script incorporating storytelling techniques.

What opportunities have been made available to you during your degree?

Through my degree, I have had the opportunity to work and deliver presentations at Questacon in Parkes and Deakin. These experiences were both enjoyable and enriching, providing me with valuable hands-on practice in science communication.

What extracurricular activities did you participate in at ANU?

I participated in the Multicultural Festival, which provided a fantastic opportunity to connect with people from diverse cultures, share experiences, and savor traditional foods from around the world.

What do you like most about your student experience so far?

One aspect of my student experience that I value most is the wide range of support services available, such as the Food Community Relief Program, which has been invaluable in providing access to essential resources.

What has been your most memorable moment at ANU so far?

Participating in the State of the Pacific Conference at Coral Bell was an incredibly memorable experience. It offered a unique opportunity to engage with experts and peers in discussions on critical issues and innovative solutions relevant to the Pacific region across various disciplines. The insights I gained were both inspiring and directly applicable to my work in science communication.

What do you enjoy doing with your free time?

In my free time, I enjoy catching up with friends and immersing myself in a good book.

Did you receive any prizes/scholarships while studying at ANU?

Not yet, but I’m grateful for the learning experiences and opportunities I’ve had so far.

How has the Australia Awards scholarship impacted your studies and opportunities?

The Australia Awards Scholarship has been a tremendous support, not only in covering my academic expenses but also in equipping me with essential life skills, such as effective budgeting and financial management. These skills have enabled me to balance my responsibilities and fully capitalize on the opportunities available to me at ANU.

What is your favorite thing about living in Canberra?

I love the abundance of spaces in Canberra designed for studying, working, relaxing, or socialising. Whether with friends and classmates or enjoying some alone time, these spaces make it easy to balance life as a student.

Could you share more about your work or involvement with Questacon? What was the most rewarding aspect of this experience?

During my time at Questacon, I had the privilege of working with several teams, each providing distinct and enriching experiences. I began with the Volunteering Experience Team, assisting at Curiosity Corner, where I engaged visitors in interactive science activities. Later, I joined the Q Lab with the Learning Experience Team, contributing by developing an evaluation report to enhance visitor engagement. Additionally, I collaborated with the National Touring Program Team at Questacon Deakin, designing and scripting a Climate Change Show. The most rewarding aspect of my experience was witnessing firsthand how science communication can ignite curiosity and foster understanding in diverse audiences.

How has your time at Questacon influenced your approach to science communication?

I received valuable advice on effectively communicating science to audiences, such as developing the character in my Climate Change Science Show or arranging exhibits to enhance visitor interaction.

What extracurricular activities did you participate in at ANU?

I participated in the Multicultural Festival, which provided a fantastic opportunity to connect with people from diverse cultures, share experiences, and enjoy traditional foods from around the world.

How has living and studying in Australia influenced your perspective or personal growth?

Living and studying in Australia has been a transformative experience, offering the opportunity to reflect on and improve my habits, while fostering personal growth and greater self-discipline. Being away from home has also deepened my appreciation for my culture and the unique qualities of Samoa, strengthening my commitment to contributing meaningfully to my community upon my return.

This time next year, where do you see yourself?

Completing my Master’s degree and further advancing in the field of science communication.

What's next after you complete your study?

After completing my studies, I plan to return to Samoa to continue my work as a Science Communicator with IMAGINE Science Samoa, applying my newly acquired skills to advance science education and outreach.

How do you envision using the skills and knowledge you’ve gained from this program in the future?

I plan to apply the skills and knowledge I’ve gained to train and mentor others, particularly the IMAGINE Science Samoa team. By strengthening their expertise, we can collectively enhance science communication efforts for students and teachers in Samoa. This ripple effect will help build a stronger foundation for science education within my community.

Any advice for future students?

Embrace every opportunity that comes your way—academic, professional, or social. Make the most of the support services and resources available at ANU; they can significantly enhance your experience. Step out of your comfort zone, as this is where the greatest growth occurs. Lastly, build connections with your peers and the broader community; these relationships will enrich your journey and create lasting memories.
