As we face increasing threats to our environment, it is more important than ever to consider the ways in which we can protect and preserve the natural world. This panel talk will delve into the complex issues surrounding nature's rights and provide insights into how we can work towards a more sustainable future.

Speakers
  • Caitlin Byrt studies how plants achieve energy efficient membrane separation to sustain essential biological processes in challenging environments. Caitlin is an Associate Professor with the ANU Research School of Biology, she serves as a Deputy Director (Research) for the ARC Future Crops Centre, and as Co-Director of a biotech start-up company Membrane Transporter Engineers Pty Ltd.
     
  • Annika Reynolds (BIntR/LLB (Hons) ‘21) is the CEO of GreenLaw, a youth-led legal research institute leveraging the expertise and imagination of the next generation of lawyers to tackle the climate crisis; and a Climate Policy Advisor for the international climate think-tank, Ember. Annika was appointed an Honorary Visiting Fellow at ANU College of Law in 2022, their research focuses on integrating rights of nature into environmental decision-making.
     
  • Penelope Han, a third-year law student, will moderate the discussion. Penelope has been a member of GreenLaw for two years, and has been involved in renewable energy and ‘right to a healthy environment’ projects. She has also worked for renewable energy companies, including WindLab, and is now the Secretariat of an organisation run by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, focusing on distributed energy resources.
