Food systems and food security research present numerous opportunities for multidisciplinary science. This field requires the integration of knowledge from various disciplines to address the complex and interconnected challenges of ensuring food security for a growing global population. By leveraging the strengths of various disciplines, we can create more resilient and sustainable food systems that are capable of meeting the nutritional needs of the global population now and in the future.
About the speaker
In addition to the acting Research Program Manager role for Soils and Land management at the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), Dr Steven Crimp is the Deputy Head of Climate with the ANU Institute for Climate Energy and Disaster Solutions (ICEDS). His role is to examine opportunities for improved climate risk management within primary industries, both in Australia and internationally. He also looks for opportunities to include multi-national and global food producers, telecommunications and other industries in his work.
Steven has over twenty years of experience designing, implementing and managing research to improve climate risk management, for national and international primary industries. He has been a contributing author and expert reviewer of the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) since 2001 and was a member of the IPCC TG-Data expert panel tasked with promoting FAIR Data Principles in order to improve data findability, accessibility, interoperability and reusability for the next IPCC assessment reports.
He has provided underpinning research for the Federal Government’s Garnaut Review regarding the likely impacts of climate change on Australian cropping and livestock productivity and in 2005 was awarded an Australia Day Achievement Award – presented for a valuable contribution to scientific research and as a communicator in relation to climate change impacts on Australia’s natural resources.
Steven currently manages a partnership between ANU, CSIRO and DFAT whose objective is to examine opportunities to enhance the resilience of Indo-Pacific Food Systems to the impacts of climate change. The Resilience Initiative for Food and Agriculture (RIFA) currently undertakes research activities across the Pacific region.
