Bennett Schneider is combining studies in physics with engineering to prepare him for a career in renewable energy development.

Bennett has recently been awarded the Wanda Henry Scholarship in Photonics and is hoping to go on exchange next year to continue building connections with world-leading researchers.

Originally from the United States, Bennett’s family moved to Canberra in 2000, where Bennett finished his schooling. “I didn’t feel a rebellious need to move away from my parents and the ANU offered a broad range of things that I was interested in,” he said.

“I really enjoy living in Canberra. It’s not too big, I can ride around the lake and I have a job at Canberra indoor rock climbing couching under 18s.”

Bennett is currently in his second year of flexible double degree and is involved in undergraduate research, focusing his interests in both photonics and renewable energy systems.

“I have quite a bit of freedom in the things that I can study,” he said.

“I like being able to just think about a problem by myself that no one has solved.”

“My course has been challenging but I live in a good environment with a good group of friends, supportive parents and my supervisor is amazing.”

“The interaction between the two colleges has worked well, being able to study the physical and engineering side.”

Bennett, along with his supervisors, recently published a paper on the efficiency of tandem solar cells.

Through Bennett’s unique double degree he was awarded the Wanda Henry Scholarship. “It is a great thing to put on my CV and to help build connections.” It has also made Bennett’s decision to apply for and exchange to either Scotland or Ireland less of a financial burden.

“I’m not sure where I want to go as I’m only half way through, I know I would like to work in renewable energy industry because I think it’s really important in this climate but I also wouldn’t mind staying on and doing research.”
