Lithospsheric mapping of Australia

This project aims to provide geological constraints on the thickness and nature of the sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) beneath the North Australian Craton (NAC) and adjacent regions in the northernmost Tasman Fold Belt in order to evaluate and constrain geophysical models of the lithosphere in this region. We will identify zones in the SCLM that have been metasomatised and geochemically enriched that might be fertile sources for metalliferous deposits and Integrate the geological data with a new generation of high resolution seismic and magnetotelluric data (to be obtained by Geoscience Australia under their Exploring for the Future initiative) on the lithosphere beneath northern Australia to define the lithospheric architecture as a basis for better defining the large scale controls on mineral prospectivity of the region through identification of deep structures and domain boundaries favourable for mineralisation.
