Paul Siwabessy is pursuing a Master of Public Health at the Australian National University degree at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (NCEPH).

Where did you complete your internship?

I completed my semester-long internship at Canberra Health Services (CHS) within the Department of Bariatric Medicine (DBM).

Why did you decide to apply for an internship?

I thought an internship at an organisation that aligned with my interests would allow me to gain valuable experience and develop a professional network in public health – something employers value. I was also motivated to apply as the proposed project at CHS piqued my interest – a project seeking to assess equitable access to Obesity Management services for culturally and linguistically diverse populations.

How was the process? What was the level of support from the college/university?

The application process was straightforward. The Internship Office and the College of Science and Medicine provided clear instructions on how to apply for the internship. They were always happy to answer questions and easy to contact. The Internship Office also provided regular updates on the application and interview process, which was reassuring when you’re ‘patiently’ waiting to hear about the outcome.

Did you end up with the specific internship opportunity that you were after? Were there others that you were interested in?

There were heaps of internships and projects to choose from. Before being accepted at CHS, I also applied for internships at the Department of Health and Aged Care (DoHAC) and End Food Waste Australia. Yes - I really was spoiled for choice!

Can you describe a day in your life as an intern?

A typical day as an intern always started off with a coffee from across the road with my supervisor before discussing the progress made towards the final report. Throughout the day, I would typically review articles, write summaries and discuss these findings with my supervisor. I also had the wonderful opportunity to discuss these findings with Twinkle Mali – a fellow Master of Public Health student – who also interned at CHS.

Biggest achievement and/or most memorable experience from your internship?

During the internship, I was fortunate enough to sit-in on group education sessions where clinicians and patients could discuss different strategies for improving nutrition, physical activity and social well-being. Being able to witness “patient-centred” care at the centre of practice was a rewarding experience. You don’t often get to witness these practices you read about in literature come to life as a student.

Do you believe this internship will help you achieve your career goals? If yes, how?

The internship has refined my ability to work iteratively with a supervisor. Whether it was submitting several drafts or getting quick feedback on a piece of work, I learned how to incorporate suggestions effectively. This skill is important in achieving any career goal, and for me, it will definitely be invaluable in pursuing a career in public health surveillance, where collaboration and evidence-based decision-making are essential.

What would you say to future students about pursuing a science internship?

Go for it! The best way to figure out whether or not you want to pursue a career in an area is to immerse yourself in the field and gain real-world experience. An internship also allows you to apply what you've learned in class in a ‘controlled’ environment and develop practical skills that will be valuable no matter what career you choose. It's also a great opportunity to establish your professional network with mentors, industry experts, and peers who can support your professional journey.

What do you enjoy doing with your free time?

I pretty much live and breathe football (soccer). Over the last summer break, I was playing with friends every evening. I can’t get enough of it!

Why did you choose ANU?

The two main reasons that drew me to ANU were the reputation for world-class education and the vibrant and lively campus.

What do you like most about your student experience so far?

I’ve made lifelong friends through the ANU AFES student society, which has profoundly shaped my university experience. It’s such an encouragement to know that I have friends and a student society to run to when things get stressful during the ups and downs of university life.

What's next after you complete your study?

I'm starting a graduate program this year at a consulting firm, working in the enterprise risk division. I’m looking forward to seeing what health-related projects I’ll be involved in.

What is your favourite thing about living in Canberra?

Apart from the beautiful walks and hikes, everything in Canberra feels like it is no more than a 15-minute drive. There’s also barely any traffic in Canberra which makes commuting easier and less stressful compared to other cities.
