Master of Science in Quantum Technology (Advanced program available)

Overview

Explore the frontier of quantum technology, covering topics such as unbreakable cryptography, faster computers and quantum phenomena with the Master of Science in Quantum Technology from Australia's national university -  one of the country's most prolific producers of quantum research.

The Quantum Age is coming, with huge investments from government and industry, domestically and internationally. The Master of Science in Quantum Technology will equip you with the scientific and technical skills, and business and policy background, to be highly competitive in the emerging quantum industries of the present day and the future.

Upon completion of the degree, you will be able to:

  • Identify appropriate mathematical and statistical techniques to apply to data
  • Evaluate physical quantities efficiently using 'back-of-the-envelope' techniques
  • Solve the Schroedinger equation to obtain wave functions for basic types of energy
  • Apply your knowledge of measurement systems and instrumentation to problems
  • Analyse a measurement system and evaluate the reliability of an instrument
  • Make reasoned arguments to validate or criticise ideas and to fact-check
  • Design a new venture concept and an innovative business model to implement it
  • Describe the basic Hilbert space structures describing all quantum field theories.

Advanced program

The Advanced program provides you with the opportunity to extend your practical, coursework experience in precision quantum technology with the development and implementation of a research project supervised by an academic. You will be required to develop expertise in a nominated area through independent research and completion of a dissertation. It is particularly relevant to those who wish to benefit from the research strengths of ANU.

Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) are available for the Advanced version of this program.

Testimonials

A smiling man

Ryan Husband

"I found the Master of Science in Quantum Technology to be a phenomenal experience. The available courses were an excellent hands-on learning experience, gave me the opportunity to work alongside some of the leading players in quantum research, and helped me to flourish as a scientist of my own. I enjoyed the program so much that I proceeded to pursue a PhD in designing and developing a world first quantum sensor. I couldn’t recommend this degree enough to other quantum technology enthusiasts if I tried!"

Angela Anna Baiju

"Now that quantum is a buzzword, it's easy to get distracted in the flow. This program helped me to identify what quantum technologies are beyond the hype it carries. It has helped to obtain hands-on experience on various quantum technologies and identify its applications. The flexibility this program provides helped me to explore much more than I expected."

Careers

A masters degree specialising in quantum technology provides you with the skills to pursue a career at the forefront of the emerging quantum industry, including quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum metrology, policy surrounding quantum technologies or further study. ANU has a strong reputation in the field of quantum science, meaning our graduates are highly sought-after and go on to find interesting careers in a range of areas. A Master of Science in Quantum Technology (Advanced) can also lead to a PhD.

The Australian National University has been ranked as the top university for graduate employability in Australia in the Global University Employability Ranking 2023-24. As a student at ANU, you gain access to the ANU CareerHub – an online career development and employability tool that includes a jobs board and careers resources. You also have access to drop-in chats with a career consultant and to attend our career fairs to meet potential employers.

Our labs have spawned the most quantum technology start-up companies of any university in Australia. Our start-ups straddle all domains of quantum technology: sensing, cryptography, computing and enabling classical technologies.
