Esteve Mesen and Hartaty Sarma Sangkot recently joined the College of Science and Medicine IDEA Committee as HDR student representatives.

The IDEA Committee brings together IDEA leads from across CoSM Schools to coordinate inclusion, diversity, equity, and access initiatives at the college level. The student representative provides an HDR perspective in committee discussions and helps ensure the student voice informs college-wide IDEA priorities.

If you are a HDR student, feel free to get in contact with Hartaty and Esteve with any ideas, suggestions or concerns.

Hartaty Sarma Sangkot

My name is Hartaty Sarma Sangkot (she/her). I am a third-year PhD student in the School of Medicine and Psychology at The Australian National University. My research focuses on digital health transformation in Indonesia. I also serve as a Student Representative on the College of Science and Medicine (CoSM) Student Consultative Committee (SCC).

Equity, diversity, and inclusion matter deeply to me. As an international student, educator, and mother of two daughters, I have experienced the challenge of adapting to a new country and environment, relocating, and balancing study with

family life. These experiences have given me a practical understanding of the HDR environment and a commitment to offering compassionate practical support to peers facing similar challenges.

Please feel free to contact me at hartaty.sangkot@anu.edu.au with any ideas or concerns.

Esteve Mesen

My name is Esteve Mesen, and I am a first-year PhD candidate in the Research School of Biology at The Australian National University, supported by the ARC Training Centre in Plant Biosecurity. My research focuses on the population genomics, adaptation and management of invasive agricultural pests, particularly noctuid moths, integrating bioinformatics and multi-omics approaches to support evidence-based biosecurity decision-making in Australia.

As an international student, I value inclusive, supportive and diverse research environments and joined the IDEA Committee because I believe every HDR student should feel heard, represented and connected to their academic community. I am happy to support students across the College of Science and Medicine, and welcome ideas, feedback or concerns related to HDR experiences and inclusion to

provide new ideas for the team integrating IDEA.

Outside research, I enjoy jogging, cooking, travelling, watching series and listening to music. Feel free to contact me, I’ll be happy to chat with you at: estevealonso.mesenporras@anu.edu.au.
