About

The Research School of Biology at ANU offers an array of practical laboratory classes on campus. These include:

In this practical, we explore genetic variation in humans (including ourselves!) and how genetic variation in blood can be used to solve forensic problems. This class is best for students who have a basic understanding of genetics.

Aspects of Human Inheritance – Dave Rowell

In this practical, we explore genetic variation in humans (including ourselves!) and how genetic variation in blood can be used to solve forensic problems. This class is best for students who have a basic understanding of genetics.

Bioinformatics and lab tour

Biology speed-dating (combination of short activities)

DNA forensics and phenotyping – Andras Keszei

In this practical, we look at how analyzing classical patterns of inheritance compares to using modern DNA forensics to identify individuals. This class is best for students who have a basic understanding of genetics and chemistry.

Features of circulation in response to activity levels in the human body – Juliey Beckman

In this class students will measure their own blood pressure and bodily temperatures after participating in different levels of physical activity. They will also have opportunity to look at their own electrocardiograms (ECGs) to observe how heart rates change in response to different conditions. Students will learn about their own bodies and how some human homeostatic responses work. This class is appropriate to all levels of physical fitness, and all students are not required to participate as experimental subjects.

Molecular modelling and bioinformatics

Parasite Detective

You are an infectious disease expert. A patient has come to you with some unusual symptoms, and you have reason to believe that they may be suffering from a parasitic infection. Your task is to diagnose the parasitic infection and suggest an appropriate treatment … before it’s too late!

Whodunit? – Juliey Beckman

In this laboratory class we will integrate different aspects of plant and animal science, such as chemical analysis, microscopy, and/or tooth and skull examinations (time permitting), to solve a hypothetical mystery. This class is suited for students who have a broad interest in biology.

The level of practical demonstrations also varies depending on the age group and our scientists will make every effort to link into the National Curriculum where possible.
