The ANU STEM boxes (International) are designed to provide hands-on learning experiences for students across astronomy, environmental science, biology, chemistry, engineering, earth science, math and physics. The boxes contain a range of equipment, materials, and resources for conducting experiments and learning activities, and are designed to be accessible and engaging for high school students. The experiments can be used to supplement classroom instruction or to support independent learning and exploration, and help promote the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and other STEM-related skills.

Experiment instructions

What activities are included this year?

  • Build a spaghetti marshmallow tower
  • DIY electric train
  • Make a fruit battery
  • Make rock candy
  • Make a simple electric motor
  • Make a solar oven

  • Paper chromatography experiment 
  • The Boodie game
  • The jugs puzzle

Please note, some activities may change if there is a shortage of materials required.

When will you receive your STEM box?

It depends on which country you are in, in general you will receive your box at the early/mid August. We will keep  you updated with your box status.

Who will be eligible to receive a box?

You need to be teaching high school, years 7-12 or equivalent. At the moment, the STEM Boxes can only be ordered by schools in selected countries due to challenges in logistics.

How many boxes can you order?

Up to 3 boxes per teacher, 1 box covering up to 30 students, additional boxes can be considered, please contact us via email below.

What will each box contain?

Each box will contain all the key materials you need to conduct 10 - 15 experiment activities across the topics of environmental science, biology, chemistry, mathematics, astronomy, physics, earth science and engineering.

We include written instructions or a video of one of our students or teachers performing the activity to guide you. Please note that for some activities which require materials with a limited shelf life, we request that you source your own materials, as we cannot post them. We assure you that the activities have been chosen with easily sourced household items in mind.

What happens after you register?

There is nothing required from your side after you register, we will keep you posted with any updates.

 STEM Boxes competition

To help you encourage your students to participate, we will award a prize to the best participating class(es)!

To participate in this competition, you need to send us either a video or photos of your students conducting the experiments (PDF or Word or PowerPoint Presentation slides), one submission per class. 

In your submission, we would love to see:

1. How many experiments have been conducted.

2. How many students have been involved.

3. How much your students have enjoyed them.

 Prize

  • Winner’s certificate to all the students from the best participating class;
  • A trophy and framed certificate to the school where the winning class is from;
  • Participation certificate to all the students who participated in this activity;
  • A framed participation certificate to all the participating schools;
  • Winning schools will be acknowledged on the University's website and social media.
