About

Professor Marcel Cardillo researches and teaches on the topics of ecology, biodiversity and conservation. He is particularly interested in large-scale patterns of biodiversity and global change.

A major goal of conservation is preventing species extinctions and loss of the world’s biodiversity, but we don’t actually know how much biodiversity the world has. Around 1.8 million species have so far been described, and thousands more are discovered every year, so we know the true number of species on earth is higher than this. But how do we estimate the size of something that hasn’t yet been discovered? Marcel will talk about some of the clever and innovative ways that scientists have developed to solve this problem, and some of the weird and wonderful species that have been discovered recently.
