As You See It! terms and conditions

By submitting an image into the As You See It! Science, Health & Medicine Photography Competition participants agree to these Terms and Conditions:

  1. By submitting an image into the As You See It! Science Health & Medicine Photography Competition participants agree to these Terms and Conditions.
  2. Entry to this Competition is free of charge, and open to current staff, current students and alumni of the Australian National University (excluding members of the Selection Committee).
  3. All Entries You submit to the Competition must be original works created by You including any post-production or editing of Entries. It is Your responsibility to ensure that You have all necessary rights and permissions to enable inclusion in the Competition and that your Entry does not infringe the copyright, privacy or other rights of any other person.
  4. Personal information: By entering this Competition You consent to the collection, use and disclosure of personal information You provide in the entry process to be used to create a Bio about You that the Organiser may then use to promote future Competitions and to appropriately credit Your Entry, and to contact You about University events activities and promotions (You can opt out of this contact at any time). Please read the Organiser’s Privacy Policy prior to entering the Competition.
  5. You retain copyright in Your Entries and by entering the Competition You agree to grant the Organiser a perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty and fee free licence to use, reproduce, publish, adapt and exploit Your Entry, including for commercial purposes, in any publication.
  6. To the extent permitted by law, in respect of Your Entry, You unconditionally and irrevocably consent to any act or omission that would otherwise infringe Your moral rights, and in particular You consent to the alteration, deletion and/or use of Your Entry in any context, with or without attribution. The Organiser will use reasonable endeavours to ensure its use of Entries includes appropriate creator attribution.
  7. You agree that You will receive no payment, remuneration or royalty from the Organiser in respect of the use of Your Bio or Your Entries by the Organiser and that the Organiser is under no obligation to use Your Bio or Your Entry for any purpose or at all.
  8. Events may occur that render the Competition itself impossible due to reasons beyond the control of the Organiser. The Organiser may at its absolute discretion amend the terms and conditions or suspend or cancel the Competition.
  9. The Organiser is not responsible for any costs arising from Your participation in the Competition, including but not limited to any costs of creation, production, preparation, submission of Entries, equipment, materials and so on. You participate in the Competition at Your own risk.

Submission process

  1. Entries must be submitted by the advertised closing time, date and method. Late, illegible, incomplete, defaced or corrupt entries will not be accepted. No responsibility will be accepted for lost or otherwise ineligible Entries. All Entries are deemed to be received at the time of receipt by the Organiser and not at the time of transmission by You.
  2. Your Entries must be submitted by You, and must not be sent through agencies or third parties. The entry form must include Your name, U number (where known), and email address, and the name and contact details of Your parent or legal guardian if you are under 18 at the time You enter the Competition.
  3. Size and format: The image file must be in JPEG Format and up to 10MB in size. Entries must be submitted online. Postal and hard copy submissions will not be accepted.
  4. Entries must include a title or caption of no more than 25 words.
  5. There are twelve (12) categories in the Competition. You may submit only one (1) image per category. At the time of submission. You may nominate which of the following categories applies to each of Your Entries and if no nomination is made, the Organiser will nominate a category:
  • ANU Medical School
  • Centre for Public Awareness in Science
  • Fenner School of Environment and Society
  • John Curtain School of Medical Research
  • Mathematical Sciences Institute
  • Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics
  • Research School of Biology
  • Research School of Chemistry
  • Research School or Earth Sciences
  • Research School of Physics
  • Research School of Population Health
  • Research School of Psychology
  1. The Organiser reserves the right to reject any Entry. Any Entry deemed by the Organiser to contain material that may be defamatory, discriminating, obscene, indecent, harassing, threatening or otherwise unlawful or objectionable in the Organiser’s opinion will at the Organiser’s sole discretion be disqualified from the Competition.
  2. You agree to refrain from any improper conduct calculated to jeopardise the fair and proper conduct of the Competition.
  3. A shortlist of Entries will be selected by a Selection Committee using the criteria of visual appeal, originality and the extent to which the image showcases science, health and medicine through the lens of ANU Alumni, Staff and Students. The decision of the Selection Committee is final and no correspondence whatsoever will be entered into about the shortlist.
  4. You release and forever discharge the Organiser, its agents, officers and employees from any and all claims and demands arising out of or in connection with the use of Your Entry or Bio, including but not limited to, any and all claims concerning privacy, defamation or financial compensation.
  5. The Competition is not a game of chance.
  6. Definitions: Competition means the “Science Health & Medicine As You See It! photography competition 2020”. Entry means photographs, images and captions submitted for judging in the Competition. Bio means a testimonial, caption or biographical information about You that may include an image of You. Organiser means the University. University means The Australian National University (ABN 52 234 063 906). You means the person who submits Entries in the Competition subject to these terms and conditions.
