New passions, new directions
I would say definitely take the opportunity. Definitely apply, if you get in take it because it’s kind of a once in a lifetime opportunity to really be in that environment
As a Tuckwell Scholar, Sarah Campbell is making the most of the mentoring and community support offered at ANU.
“I would have come to the ANU regardless but I was offered the Tuckwell Scholarship,” Sarah said.
Sarah is finishing her first year in a Bachelor of Science (Advanced) (Honours). “I chose it because I wanted to challenge myself over the normal Bachelor of Science,” she said.
The Tuckwell scholarship has not only afforded Sarah the ability to focus on her studies but has supported her through the community and mentors that the scholarship offers. “Knowing that I can go to my mentor and talk about anything from my degree to my life, has definitely benefited me in so many ways,” she said.
Sarah knew she always wanted to do science and has always had an interest. “I really hope I can make a contribution to the scientific community and discover something new,” she said. Sarah was originally going to study biology and genetics. “I found the research especially fascinating.”
Although Sarah did not study chemistry in high school she took chemistry this year, finding new passions which are leading her in new directions. “One of the lecturers in chemistry told me about a growing field in chemical genetics, which is more about modifying genetics from a chemical perspective, looking to see how chemicals interact with genes,” she said.
“The support I have received from chemistry has been amazing.
“All of my lecturers are willing to talk to me if I ever have a problem.”
One of Sarah’s most memorable experiences to date has been trialing the experiments for the chemistry curriculum. “It was really good and I felt like I understood why we were doing these experiments,” she said.
Sarah comes from outside Bega on a small goat farm. She has found it easy adjusting to the lifestyle at ANU and living on campus. “I would say definitely take the opportunity. Definitely apply, if you get in take it because it’s kind of a once in a lifetime opportunity to really be in that environment,” she said.
