Dr Danswell Starrs grew up on a farm south of Canberra, and was interested in the fish and crustaceans in the creek from a very young age. His current research explores whether CT scans can be used to determine the age of a fish while keeping it alive, rather than the existing time-consuming method which necessitates killing the fish and removing its ear stones (otoliths).
