A Summer Research Scholarship at The Australian National University is an exceptional research opportunity, giving you insight into what Honours or studying for a higher degree is all about, and working with leading scholars in your field.
Who can apply?
The scholarships are available for students currently enrolled in Australian and New Zealand universities completing the third or fourth year of a full-time course leading to an honours degree.
What do Summer Research Scholars do?
Summer scholars work closely with an academic supervisor on a research topic of their choice. Students have a unique opportunity to work with researchers who are international leaders in their fields. The summer research scholarship also allows students to experience a specialist research environment first-hand.
At the conclusion of the research project summer scholars submit a brief report on their findings.
What do I get with a Scholarship?
The Scholarship provides a contribution towards travel expenses to and from Canberra based on economy railfares at student concession rates (or, for people from more distant parts of Australia, and New Zealand, economy-class airfares), accommodation and all meals at a residential college on campus and a weekly allowance of $135 (tax exempt).
What can I study?
Academic units in the ANU College of Medicine, Biology and Environment and ANU College of Physical & Mathematical Sciences are each offering exciting research projects this summer:
Summer Research Internships for ANU students
A number of research schools at ANU offer a Summer Research Internship to ANU students as an alternative to the Summer Research Scholarship. The Internship program for ANU students is similar to the ANU Summer Research Scholarship program but with variation to the funding provided to recipients. A Summer Research Intern has access to the Summer Research Scholar community activities and events, workshops and the University support services. Interns will receive a certificate of recognition at the completion of the program.
Offers are made subject to the availability of funding and appropriate supervision. The cost for campus accommodation is generally not covered for Summer Research Interns. Summer Research Interns are offered the same weekly living allowance as Summer Research Scholars ($135 in 2011) only with limited or no funding towards travel and accommodation. The internship conditions may vary at the discretion of individual Colleges or research centres.
If you are a current ANU student and you meet the Summer Research Scholarship eligibility criteria, your application for a scholarship may be considered for either a Summer Research Scholarship or a Summer Research Internship. However, some research areas will only offer ANU students a Summer Research Internship and will not offer a Summer Research Scholarship. No additional application is required for a Summer Research Internship.
Summer Research Internships may be offered to current ANU graduate students. Please confirm this with the College/research centre of your interested before submitting an application.
