1. Sub-Dean
1.1 A request for status for a course passed at:
(a) another university;
(b) an approved institution;
(c) the Australian National University ("ANU");
will be determined by a Sub Dean on behalf of the College, in
accordance with these regulations.
2. Interpretation
2.1 For the purposes of these Regulations:
(a) "the College" means the College of Science of
the Australian National University
(b) "a student" includes, where the context indicates,
a former student.
3. Classification of Status
3.1 Any status granted to a student will be classified by the
Sub Dean as:
(a) Specified status;or
(b) Unspecified status.
3.2 Status will be Specified when the Sub Dean is satisfied
that the course completed previously by the student corresponds
substantially to the work required in a specific course prescribed
for a bachelor degree offered by the College.
3.3 Status will be Unspecified when the course completed previously
by the student does not correspond to the work required in a
specific course prescribed for a bachelor degree offered by
the College, but is still adjudged by the Sub Dean to be suitable
to that particular bachelor degree.
4. Status for Incomplete Bachelor Degrees
of ANU
4.1 A student:
(a) currently enrolled in a bachelor degree at the ANU but who
has not qualified to receive the degree and who applies to transfer
to a bachelor degree program of the College; or
(b) who was enrolled in a bachelor degree at the ANU but who
did not qualify to receive the degree and who applies for admission
to a bachelor degree program of the College;
may be granted status for courses passed, subject to the conditions
in regulation 4.2
4.2 Status may be granted under regulation 4.1 subject to the
following conditions:
(a) all status determination will be based on the equivalence
of units and program structure required for completion of the
previous bachelor degree program to the units and program structure
required for the relevant bachelor degree offered by the College;
(b) status for courses passed will be subject to restrictions
on program structure and status imposed by the relevant bachelor
degree requirements;
(c) unless the Sub Dean otherwise determines, status shall not
be granted for a course passed where a period of 10 years or
more has elapsed from the date the student enrolled in that
course and the date on which the student applies for status
in respect of that course.
4.3 Where a student is granted status under regulation 4.1,
the final date for completion of the bachelor degree at the
College will be counted as ten years from the beginning of the
year in which the earliest course for which status is granted,
is passed. This regulation is subject to regulation 4.4.
4.4 If the time allowed for the completion of the relevant degree
under regulation 4.3 is insufficient for the student under ordinary
circumstances, the Sub Dean may still grant status and prescribe
a new final date for completion of the degree, based on the
courses to be completed in the degree.
5. Status for Incomplete Bachelor Degrees of Another University,
Polytechnics, TAFE or Similar Institution
5.1 A student:
(a) currently enrolled in another university or similar institution
but has not qualified to receive a bachelor degree and who applies
to transfer to a bachelor degree program of the College; or
(b) who was enrolled as student of another university or a similar
institution but did not qualify to receive a bachelor degree
and who has applied to transfer to a bachelor degree program
of the College;
may be granted status for courses passed subject to the conditions
in regulation 5.2.
5.2 Status may be granted under regulation 5.1 subject to the
following conditions:
(a) all status determination will be based on the equivalence
of units and program structure required for completion of the
bachelor degree program at the other university or similar institution,
to the units and program structure required for the relevant
bachelor degree offered by the College;
(b) status for courses passed will be subject to restrictions
on program structure and status imposed by the relevant bachelor
degree requirements;
(c) status may be granted for courses to the value of no more
than:
96 units towards a 144 units pass degree; or
48 units towards the Science component of a combined program.
(d) unless the Sub Dean otherwise determines, status shall not
be granted for a course passed at a university, polytechnics
or TAFE, where a period of 10 years or more has elapsed from
the date the student enrolled in that course and the date on
which the student applies for status in respect of that course.
5.3 If status is granted, the student is then required to pass
in the College at least 48 units (which is to include 36 Group
C units) of later-year Science courses offered by a science-related
department.
5.4 Where a student is granted status under regulation 5.1,
the final date for completion of the bachelor degree at the
College will be counted as ten years from the beginning of the
year in which the earliest course for which status is granted,
is passed. This regulation is subject to regulation 5.5.
5.5 If the time allowed for the completion of the relevant degree
under regulation 5.4 is insufficient for the student under ordinary
circumstances, the Sub Dean may still grant status and prescribe
a new final date for completion of the degree, based on the
courses to be completed in the degree.
6. Graduate Status
6.1 Graduates of ANU, another university, or a similar institution,
who have completed a bachelor degree, may be granted status
subject to the following:
(a) status will normally be granted for courses to the value
of:
72 units towards a 144 units pass degree;
48 units towards the Science component of a combined program;
6.2 If graduate status is granted, the balance of the degree
must comprise Science courses completed at ANU. The courses
must include 48 units of later-year courses, of which 36 units
must be for Group C courses. Courses may not be included which
are substantially equivalent to those taken in previous degrees;
6.3 The Sub Dean may grant graduate status regardless of when
the graduate completed the bachelor degree. Where graduate status
is granted and specific status is added from other areas, the
total status shall not exceed 72 units towards a 144 units pass
degree or 48 units towards the science component of a combined
program;
6.4 Where a student is granted graduate status under regulation
6.1, the final date for completion of the bachelor degree at
the College will be counted as five years from the beginning
of the year in which the bachelor degree program of the College
is commenced. The amount of status awarded will be subject to
restrictions in program structure and status imposed by the
relevant bachelor degree requirement.
7. Status for an Associate Diploma, Diploma
or Advanced Diploma
7.1 Graduates of ANU, another university, or a similar institution
who have completed an associate diploma, diploma or advanced
diploma, may be granted status subject to the following:
(a) for an Associate Diploma, Diploma or Advanced Diploma in
a science-related field, status may be granted for courses to
the value of 48 Group A units, except that this may be reduced
where the Associate Diploma, Diploma or Advanced Diploma contains
exemptions for studies carried out in a secondary school. The
status awarded will primarily be Group A but may include up
to 24 group B units;
(b) for an Associate Diploma, Diploma or Advanced Diploma in
a non-science field, status may be granted for courses to the
value of 24 first-year non-science (Group E) units for courses
recognised for status purposes by another College of ANU. However,
the Sub Dean may at his or her discretion, grant status if a
course is not recognised by another College.
7.2 Status shall not be granted for an incomplete Associate
Diploma, Diploma or Advanced Diploma. From time to time the
Dean may impose a grade average to be required before status
is granted.
7.3 Unless the Sub Dean otherwise determines, status shall not
be granted for an Associate Diploma, Diploma or Advanced Diploma
commenced more than ten years before the date on which the graduate
applies for status. Additional status up to 96 units for a 144
units pass degree or 48 units for the science component of a
combined program may be awarded for specific institutions.
7.4 Where a student is granted status under regulation 7.1,
the final date for completion of the relevant degree at the
College will be counted as ten years from the beginning of the
year in which the earliest course for which status is granted,
is passed. This regulation is subject to regulation 7.5
7.5 If the time allowed for the completion of the relevant degree
under regulation 7.4 is insufficient for the student under ordinary
circumstances, the Sub Dean may still grant status and prescribe
a new final date for completion of the degree, based on the
courses to be completed in the degree.
8. Status for a Graduate Diploma
8.1 Status shall not be granted for a Graduate Diploma except
where the student's only tertiary qualification is a Graduate
Diploma, in which case the Sub Dean may grant status.
The Sub Dean shall determine, on a case by case basis, the status
to be granted for the courses passed in the Graduate Diploma.
8.3 Status shall not be granted for an incomplete Graduate Diploma.
8.4 Where status is granted under regulation 8.2, the final
date for completion of the relevant degree at the College will
be counted as ten years from the beginning of the year in which
the earliest course for which status is granted, is passed.
This regulation is subject to regulation 8.5. .
8.5 If the time allowed for the completion of the relevant degree
under regulation 8.4 is insufficient for the student under ordinary
circumstances, the Sub Dean may still grant status and prescribe
a new final date for completion of the degree, based on the
courses to be completed in the degree.
9. Status for non-award courses
9.1 Status may be granted for courses passed which form part
of a bachelor degree program at the College or another university,
or similar institution, but which were undertaken on a non-award
basis.
9.2 Unless the Sub Dean otherwise determines, a student shall
not be granted status for a course passed at a university, or
a similar institution, where a period of 10 years or more has
elapsed from the date the student enrolled in that course and
the date on which the student applies for status in respect
of that course.
9.3 Where a student is granted status under regulation 9.1,
the final date for completion of the relevant degree at the
College will be counted as ten years from the beginning of the
year in which the earliest course for which status is granted,
is passed. This regulation is subject to regulation 9.4.
9.4 If the time allowed for the completion of the relevant degree
under regulation 9.3 is insufficient for the student under ordinary
circumstances, the Sub Dean may still grant status and prescribe
a new final date for completion of the degree, based on the
courses to be completed in the degree.
10. Completion of Degree at Another University
10.1 In the case where a student of the College who, on admission
to the bachelor degree program of the College, had not received
status for courses passed at another university in Australia
or overseas:
A student of the College may be authorised to complete the degree
requirements of the College at another university in Australia
or overseas, provided that:
(a) the student has already completed at the College 48 units
of later-year Science courses (which include 24 Group C units)
offered by a science-related department; and
(b) the student has obtained prior written approval of the Sub
Dean for the courses to be undertaken at the other university
and which fulfil the relevant bachelor degree program requirements
at the College.
10.2 In the case where a student of the College who, on admission
to the bachelor degree program of the College, had received
status for courses passed at another university in Australia
or overseas:
A student of the College may be authorised to complete the degree
requirements of the College at another university in Australia
or overseas, provided that:
(a) the student has already completed at the College 48 units
of later-year Science courses (which include 36 Group C units)
offered by a science-related department; and
(b) the student has obtained prior written approval of the Sub
Dean for the courses to be undertaken at the other university
and which fulfil the relevant bachelor degree program requirements
at the College.
11. Student on exchange to an overseas
university
11.1 A student of the College who proceeds on an exchange program
at an overseas university may receive status on return to the
College for courses passed at the overseas university, provided
the student has obtained prior written approval of the Sub Dean
for the courses to be undertaken at the other university and
which fulfil the relevant bachelor degree program requirements
at the College.
11.2 A student of the College who, on admission to the bachelor
degree program of the College, has received status for the equivalent
of more than 24 units of courses passed at another university
in Australia or overseas and who wants to proceed on an exchange
program at an overseas university, must complete at least 36
Group C units at the College. The student may receive status
on return to the College for courses passed at the overseas
university, provided the student has obtained prior written
approval of the Sub Dean for the courses to be undertaken at
the other university and which fulfil the relevant bachelor
degree program requirements at the College.
12. Status for Associate Degree
12.1 Status of 72 units including specification of the courses
completed at the ANU will be awarded for the completed Associate
Degree in Science ANU/CIT subject to 12.2.
12.2 The CIT component of the Associate Degree must be passed
with a gpa of credit.
12.3 Status for courses passed will be subject to restrictions
on program structure and status imposed by the relevant bachelor
degree requirements.
12.4 Unless the Sub Dean otherwise determines, status shall
not be granted for a course passed where a period of 10 years
or more has elapsed from the date the student enrolled in that
course and the date on which the student applies for status
in respect of that course.
12.5 Where a student is granted status under regualtion 12.1,
the final date for completion of the bachelor degree at the
ANU will be counted as ten years from the beginning of the year
in which the earliest course for which status is granted, is
passed. This regulation is subject to regulation 12.6.
12.6 If the time allowed for the completion of the relevant
degree under regulation 12.1 is insufficient for the student
under ordinary circumstances, the Sub Dean may still grant status
and prescribe a new final date for completion of the degree,
based on the courses to be completed in the degree.
13. Miscellaneous
13.1 For the avoidance of any doubt, a student cannot apply
for status for a course(s) passed at the College, another university,
college of advanced education or similar institution, where
the student intends to enrol or is currently enrolled in equivalent
course(s) at the College.
