2009 Awards for Excellence in Education

ANU College of Medicine, Biology and Environment / ANU College of Physical Sciences will this year offer 4 awards of $5,000 each for excellence in education.

Applications are sought from any staff from the joint colleges under the following four categories.
  1. Award for Teaching Excellence
  2. Award for Excellence in Supervision
  3. Award for a Program That Enhances Learning
  4. Citation for an Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning

Note category 4 is open to all staff and not just academic staff, and that these 4 categories are the same as the ones for the ANU Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in Education. Applicants for the joint colleges awards need to address in their application the criteria listed at this webpage for whatever category they wish to apply for.

Applications must be emailed to panit.thamsongsana@anu.edu.au by 5pm Thursday November 26th.

Individuals can apply for more than one category and can also be part of more than one team listed under category 3 (Programs that enhance learning). Depending on the quality of applications more than one award may be offered in a category and none in others. The selection committee will be the Dean of Science, Deputy Dean of Science and the Director of the Centre for Education Development and Academic Methods.

There is no need to provide the full details requested for the ANU Vice-Chancellor's Awards, but applicants are encouraged to provide at least a 2 page statement addressing the selection criteria listed there, plus a recent CV. Applicants are also strongly encouraged to include sample hard copy or urls of material that they have developed to support students, eg. course outlines, guides for students you are supervising, etc..

Note: unlike the ANU and the Australian Learning & Teaching Council awards individuals and teams can self nominate for the Science teaching awards.

In each case award money will be given to the winners on the condition it is used to assist their teaching and/or research.

Winners of the ANU College of Medicine, Biology and Environment / ANU College of Physical Sciences awards are strongly urged to use their award money to assist them in further enhancing and documenting their teaching practice to maximise their chance of being successful in the ANU Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Awards and the National Awards.

Winners of the College of Science Awards or the ANU Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in the previous 3 years are ineligible for applying for individual categories. Previous National Award winners are ineligible for renomination within 6 years unless they are part of a team applying for the "Program" category.

Anyone wanting assistance putting an application together or comments on a draft should contact Richard.Baker@anu.edu.au.

A reminder about the ongoing support for staff to attend teaching related workshops and conferences

ANU College of Medicine, Biology and Environment / ANU College of Physical Sciences has an ongoing grant scheme to support staff to present papers at teaching related workshops and conferences.

The scheme allows any Academic staff, general staff and any students involved in science teaching to participate in teaching and learning related conferences or "add-on" workshops that are increasingly being held as part of discipline based conferences. The funds will typically be top-ups to School / Departmental funds to attend such conferences.

The application process is to submit a very short statement to Richard.Baker@anu.edu.au that outlines the conference you wish to attend, the paper you are going to give and how you think your attendance will benefit you and the College. Your statement should also include a three line budget that separates out anticipated costs into:
  1. transport
  2. registration fees
  3. other costs

Support per individual will usually be limited to $1500 for conferences in Australia and $3000 for international conferences. If your costs are greater than this you will be expected to find supplementary funding.

The selection committee of Richard Baker, Deputy Dean of Science, and Gerlese Akerlind, Director of CEDAM, will meet as needed to assess applications.

On your return to ANU you will be expected to give a seminar about your paper and/or the conference more generally.
