Staff Movements
Rana Ganguly, School Manager for the Research School of Physics and Engineering, has been appointed to the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for a period of six months from Wednesday 1 July 2009 as Executive Officer, Alliances, to coordinate the ANU's domestic alliance initiatives. Proposal for Research School of Chemistry (RSC) and Research School of Biology (RSB) Workshop Merger - UPDATE
The Working Party for the RSC and RSB Joint Workshop Proposal met for the first time on Tuesday 30 June 2009 to discuss and endorse the Terms of Reference, establish priority tasks and to set the first action items in train. On Monday 6 July 2009 Working Party members toured each of the facilities involved in the merger project and reconvened on Tuesday 7 July 2009 for their second meeting.

Smoking on Campus
All staff and students are reminded that ANU is a smoke free work environment. If you wish to smoke outside a University building you are asked, while smoking, to keep at least 10 metres away from any entrance way, doorway, window or ventilation intake of the building. In coming weeks the ANU Medical School will be putting up signs around the Peter Baume Building to advise that smoking is not permitted within the immediate areas surrounding the building. Disposal of cigarette butts within this area should be avoided or use made of the sand boxes provided. See more information...

CMBE PhD student shines in 2009 Australian National Postgraduate Law Conference
Congratulations to Catherine Gross of the Fenner School of Environment and Society on winning a prize worth $500 for the best paper at the 2009 Australian National Postgraduate Law Conference, Law and Change. The Conference was held on Thursday 11 June and Friday 12 June 2009 at the ANU College of Law. Her paper was titled 'Listening for a change? Perceptions of injustice in water distribution decisions'. Well done Catherine!
2009 NSW/ACT Young Tall Poppy Science Award – Call for Nominations
The Australian Institute of Policy and Science is inviting nominations for a bright young researcher in the 2009 NSW/ACT Young Tall Poppy Science Award. Nominations are accepted from all fields of Science and Technology including medical research, physical and biological sciences, engineering and computer science. All sectors including universities, research institutions, government agencies and the private sector are encouraged to nominate. Nominees will be up to 35 years of age with between two and ten years post-doctoral research experience. Nominations close Friday 31 July 2009. See full selection criteria and nomination forms...

NEW 2010 Fulbright Senior Specialist Grant Program
Applications are now open for Australian Institutions to host a 2010 Fulbright U.S. Senior Specialist. The Fulbright U.S. Senior Specialist Program subsidises Australian educational institutions to bring a U.S. Senior Specialists to Australia for a two to six week period. The scholarship provides the approved Specialist with an international airfare and $US200 per day honorarium. Update on Senior Administrative Appointments
We are pleased to announce the appointment and commencement on Monday 6 July 2009 of the new Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics School Manager, Mike Fowler. Mike brings long and varied work experience in a range of government and business management roles, most recently with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. Mike's experience includes ten years in senior administrative positions in the Australian Space Office, and in policy development for the commercial space sector. We look forward to working with Mike.
