Student Profile - Scott Reynolds
"I'm fascinated by all aspects of the human mind. Then again, I'm fascinated by just about any aspect of science, medicine and health!"

What degree are you studying?
I'm studying Psychology with Honours.

What year of study are you in?
I'm in my second year with ANU.

Where is your hometown?
Right here in Canberra!

Why did you choose to study at ANU over any other institution?
Why wouldn't I? It's one of the best universities in the world and it has a great selection of courses, both for my electives and my main degree.

Why did you choose to study a science, medicine or health degree?
I chose to study Psychology because of how interesting it is. I'm fascinated by all aspects of the human mind. Then again, I'm fascinated by just about any aspect of science, medicine and health! Psychology also allows me to help people while studying the mind, so it stood out for me.

What is your favourite science, medicine or health class so far and why?
Tough question. The Science Communication courses I've taken are steady contenders for the lead, I didn't think I'd enjoy them as much as I have. However, I'd probably have to go with Biological Basis of Behaviour. As difficult as the course was, it was incredibly interesting and a real challenge.

What has the highlight of being at university been for you so far?
The new social circles. I love meeting new people, making new friends and the like. Of course, I also love learning, so there's that too! If I was completely honest though, I think the highlight of my uni days is coming up shortly (August 5-8) when the first Australian Humans vs Zombies game is running!

What surprised you most about classes at university?
Probably how large a part self motivation plays. It can be tough and I mean really tough to go to classes some days, when you know there's no penalty for skipping lectures. That's why finding something you enjoy is so important, because you don't want to skip them!

What do you want to do when you finish your degree?
You could boil it down to "helping people with my psychology degree". That could be as a clinical psychologist, or working in the public health system, perhaps going into the private sector and being a company psychologist... We'll see!

Describe a typical day for you at ANU.
Heh, well it varies. Generally I'll be getting in early because I catch the bus and a lot of my classes tend to be early in the day. Coffee at Degree with a good friend of mine is how we usually start, before we go off to class, to study or well... slack off. Midday-ish is lunchtime, then afternoon classes if I have them. If not, I'll usually head home to do some more study or hang around with some friends. It's wonderful having a bar on campus. Sometimes I have night classes, always labs/tutorials because lectures run during the day. Other than that, it's home time to study, do assignments or relax if I'm on top of everything.

I love the part where how every single body of knowledge [in science] contributes to itself – it’s like every researcher is dedicated to a little dot, and they all come to form a complete circle. It’s so collaborative – everyone’s part of the team.
