"All the lecturers are so knowledgeable about the places we go and they inspire us with their enthusiasm."
What degree are you studying?
Bachelor of Science
What year of study are you in?
Second year of a three year degree.
Where is your hometown?
Canberra, Australia.
Why did you choose to study at ANU over any other institution?
ANU has an international reputation as an excellent University and is the best University to study science in Australia. It is also a 10 minute drive from my house.
Why did you choose to study a science, medicine or health degree?
I had an excellent Year 11 and 12 biology teacher who inspired me to continue with science, particularly biology at university.
What is your favourite science, medicine or health class so far and why?
Marine Biology (BIOL2112). We were taught about so many interesting marine animals. This class also had a field trip to the coast, where we spend half a day examining the rock pools.
What has the highlight of being at university been for you so far?
Field excursions, particularly the ones I have done to Kioloa (the University's coastal field station). All the lecturers are so knowledgeable about the places we go and they inspire us with their enthusiasm.
What surprised you most about classes at university?
I was surprised that for some courses we had a number of lecturers, each being a specialist researcher in the topic they were teaching. This meant that we learnt about the most up to date research findings.
What do you want to do when you finish your degree?
I want to become a teacher, either a primary teacher or a high school science teacher.
Describe a typical day for you at ANU?
During the morning I attend lectures where we are introduced to the topic. I have lunch on campus with friends sitting in the landscaped grounds. In the afternoon we either attend practical sessions, doing experiments or making observations or tutorials where we discuss the lecture content. Sometimes we go on excursions which demonstrate examples of what we have learnt. Some of these include trips to the Botanic Gardens, undertaking soil tests, monitoring wildlife and visiting geological sites.
