Student Profile - Marcus Haynes
Bachelor of Global and Ocean Science, 2008
"It’s been really interesting to hear from Questacon and other professionals."

What is your thesis topic / field of interest?
I'm mainly interested in geology. I'm in my second year, so I've mainly done general subjects to this point. I'm doing SCOM2001 because I thought it would give me an edge communicating and in getting a job.

Where have you come from to do this program?
I'm originally from Muswellbrook, but when my family moved to Merimbula I finished High School in Canberra. I saw the science communication courses in my program outline and I thought they would complement the rest of my studies.

What experience have you gained while studying at CPAS?
It's been pretty helpful - the course I've done has really helped to broaden my scope... I guess you don't normally think about communicating science!

What have you learned about yourself during your time here?
I've definitely learned improved communication skills - and how important they are.

What do you see yourself doing upon completion of the program?
I'm currently doing a cadetship at GeoScience Australia during the university holidays, so I hope to end up there.

What has been the highlight of the program?
Definitely the different guest lecturers we've had, it's been really interesting to hear from Questacon and other professionals.

Why would you recommend this program to others?
Of course it depends on their particular focus, but there are definitely advantages with having science communication skills. I think both straight science students and communication / education students can get something out of it.

Benefits of being at the ANU / life in Canberra?
Well I've been in Canberra a while now! It's a really good size, and the open spaces and trees are really nice; it's like a big country town.
