Student Profile - Elizabeth Evans
Master of Science Communication, 2008
"This course has opened my eyes to science being involved in multitudes of disciplines, such as art, music, sport and drama."

What is your thesis topic / field of interest?
I'm really interested in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and looking at why it is under diagnosed and mismanaged. I'm doing a project looking at medical students' communication skills in doctor - patient consultations, in regards to PTSD diagnosis and management.

Where have you come from to do this program?
I completed a Bachelor of Medical Science at ANU. During this degree I worked as a Project Officer at the AIDS Action Council of the ACT, promoting various sexual health campaigns. I also started an acting degree before coming to ANU, so I jumped at the opportunity of doing this degree, so I could combine all of these skills.

What experience have you gained while studying at CPAS?
I have learnt a lot about designing communication plans, such as the various strategies and tactics that can be used. During this course I have also had the opportunity to participate in cross-cultural communications training, website and print design, and learn about different personality traits.

What have you learned about yourself during your time here?
I know it sounds corny, but this course has opened my eyes to science being involved in multitudes of disciplines, such as art, music, sport and drama.

What do you see yourself doing upon completion of the program?
I plan to pursue medicine.

What has been the highlight of the program?
It's been really interesting to do different things, and the acting really interests me. Combining entertainment and science is exciting. Another highlight has been the creativity and critical thinking that this course has encouraged.

Why would you recommend this program to others?
This course develops very important skills. I think it is really important to broaden beyond research, and engage with the community. Medicine in particular requires development of excellent communication skills, in order to make accurate diagnosis and to engage a patient to participate in their health management.

Benefits of being at the ANU / life in Canberra?
Well I'm a Canberra local - I love it! It's got the best of both worlds really, shopping, cafés, music and theatre, while also being big in water sports and bushwalking. I also love the fact that we are so close to the snow and Mount Kosciusko.

Science is just not as subjective as other disciplines. Water is made up of Hydrogen and Oxygen, and that’s that. I’ve taken philosophy classes, and we debate issues in circles, and for me, that’s frustrating. In science, there is always an answer; we just might not know what it is yet.

"[The highlight was] touring around Australia, doing school shows and seeing students of all ages enjoying science."

I love the part where how every single body of knowledge [in science] contributes to itself – it’s like every researcher is dedicated to a little dot, and they all come to form a complete circle. It’s so collaborative – everyone’s part of the team.
