Passionate about plants?

"ANU Plant Science Scholarships aim to help students from the bush, fix the bush."

Australia is experiencing its worst drought in 100 years. Food crops are struggling to cope with a more variable environment and plant ecosystems are under threat from loss of habitat. Knowledge on native plants and their uses as food and medicines are being lost. Food prices around the world are soaring, and increases in fertilizer prices, lack of water and demands for biofuels are likely to make the situation worse in the future. New policies to regulate carbon accounting will require fundamental knowledge in how plants and ecosystems use carbon.

You could be making a difference by getting involved in Plant Science research at the ANU, Australia’s top ranked university. We recognise that the key to success in any scientific program is people. So we're on the lookout for promising students who will be passionately motivated to develop scientific solutions to the current problems. We want to target students from rural areas in particular because we believe they will have direct experience of the current challenges facing plant sciences and a strong desire to address them. At ANU we will equip you to be involved in finding solutions to climate change, crop productivity, ecosystem management or developing alternative energy sources.

The ANU now offers Plant Science Scholarships to provide the best possible training for undergraduate students in Plant Science. As a receiver of one of the scholarships you will study towards a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Plant Science, teaching you all aspects of plants from gene to cell to whole plant and landscape.

You will receive a $6500 per year stipend during your 3-year undergraduate degree, plus honours and will have the opportunity to take part in research in plant science at the ANU or with one of our Industry and Government partners. For example, the first of these scholarships has been provided by the CSIRO Division of Plant Industry and CSIRO will provide an opportunity to work in the CSIRO Labs and be part of the science underway there.

We encourage all students with an interest in plant science, especially from rural Australia, to apply for an ANU Plant Science Scholarship. Entry requirements will be the same as for the Bachelor of Science at the ANU. The application process is competitive and will include an evaluation of your UAI, as well as a short assay on why you are interested in plant science.

Deadline for applications is December 18
