Two researchers have won Young Tall Poppy Awards from the Australian Institute of Policy and Science. Dr Ajay Narendra from the ARC Centre of Excellence in Vision Science was acknowledged for his work on the vision systems used by insects for navigation. The Times Higher Education QS World University Rankings 2008 were released today with ANU maintaining its rank of 16th for the third year in a row.

The Australian National University is now the highest ranked outside of the USA or the UK, between Cornell and Stanford universities. ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb said ANU was in good company. “One of the outcomes of these rankings systems is not so much the number attributed to you, but who your neighbours are. We’ve been put into that neighbourhood based on the same indicators and measures, and if on those indicators you’re rubbing shoulders with universities like that you can be pleased.”

Vietnam Field SchoolSep 24, 2008
Every January for 3 weeks ANU offers the Vietnam Field School. The course immerses students in exploring environment and society issues in Vietnam. A key part of the course has been the active engagement of students from Da Nang university in the course. As well as hosting the Australian students in a home stay a number of these Vietnamese students have accompanied us into the field to work as translators for the Australian student research projects.

New species of Pacific Iguana discoveredSep 22, 2008
In a new paper just published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, Scott Keogh, Danielle Edwards and colleagues have described a newly discovered species of Fijian iguana, which they have named Brachylophus bulabula. They also have solved the riddle of how the ancestors of these iguanas got to the middle of the Pacific. All of their closest relatives are in the Americas and their ancestors rafted to Fiji up to 13 million years ago. It has made worldwide news. Contact Scott Keogh (phone 6125 0641)

It was an epic battle with hula hoops, a king from far far away, a cat in a box and a diamond as big as a hand, but in the end there was one winner - Amrita Prasad.

The arena was Physics Students Uncovered which started the University’s National Science Week activities. Five ANU PhD students gave 10 minute presentations in a test of their ability to explain science concepts to a non-scientific audience.

ANU College of Science visits Cambodia for Teacher TrainingAug 16, 2008
BaMBi's Sue Cossetto recently delivered a set of teaching workshops at the National Institute of Education in Phnom Penh. Secondary teachers from around Cambodia attended, gaining knowledge in teaching methods and current topics in biology.

Additionally, ANU College of Science donated prizes for the Teachers Science Fair where Sue was one of the evaluators.

Cannabis DNA database launchedAug 12, 2008
The Australian Federal Police, ANU and the Canberra Institute of Technology have compiled a national genetic database of cannabis samples, to help law enforcement agencies track down cannabis suppliers.

BoZo’s Dr Rod Peakall said establishing links between the plants was a complex process but said the cannabis program had been a test case for forensic botany.

ANU College of Science visits JapanJun 15, 2008
The College visited Japan during June to showcase science with Austrade. As part of Study in Australia Week - JAPAN 2008 the College visited the Australian Embassy in Tokyo and four other major cities within Japan, from Fukuoka in the south, to Sapporo in the north. Meeting future postgraduate students and alumni of the college. As a result the ANU College of Science was invited to do an Industry presentation by the Embassy and plans to combine it with an Alumni social evening. PhD student Jean Drayton of BoZo has been awarded a research grant by The Australian Geographic Society. She is funded to study the effect of inbreeding on male call attractiveness in the wild, and will conduct the fieldwork at Smith's Lakes next field season.

Kiaran Kirk has been awarded the annual ANU Vice-Chancellor's Award for excellence in research supervision. Adele Lehane, a PhD student in Kiaran’s lab, was awarded an Early Career Researcher poster prize at the recent 'Molecular Approaches to Malaria' meeting in Lorne. This meeting, held every four years, is one of the major international meetings in the area of malaria parasite biology.

An international team including RSAA astronomer Professor Gary S. Da Costa has been studying the Antennae Galaxies and has produced a surprising result. New research on the Antennae Galaxies using the Advanced Camera for Surveys onboard the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows that this benchmark pair of interacting galaxies is in fact much closer than previously thought - 45 million light-years instead of 65 million light-years.

J.G. Crawford Prize winner announcedMay 07, 2008
Congratulations to Dr Rian Dewhurst, formerly of the Research School of Chemistry. Rian completed his PhD studies on the synthesis of novel bi- and trimetallic complexes bridged by tricarbido ligands, and is currently a Research Associate at the University of Wurzburg. The Crawford Prize is the ANU's highest postgraduate honour in recognition of outstanding academic excellence.

Hugh O'Neill has been innovative and excellent in combining the thermodynamics of minerals with advances in experimental petrology, is a leading authority in fields that underpin much of igneous and planetary petrology and geochemistry. He is highly regarded for advancing fundamental research in a number of areas including the composition of the Earth, Moon and planetary interiors.

Advanced Gravitational Wave Observatory fundedApr 14, 2008
Physicists in the US and at the ANU Centre for Gravitational Physics have used the quantum nature of light to make an important step towards improving the sensitivity of kilometre-sized interferometers used to search for gravitational waves. By using light in a "squeezed state" they achieved a 44% improvement in sensitivity of a prototype gravitational-wave detector. More Information...

Australian Society for Plant Scientists Goldacre AwardMar 31, 2008
The 2007 Goldacre medal, which is awarded yearly to an early career researcher in plant science, was awarded to Ulrike Mathesius during the annual ComBio Conference in Sydney, accompanied by a lecture about Ulrike's work on the molecular signals that control root-microbe interactions. This award was established in 1965 in recognition of the plant physiologist Peter Goldacre, and as an encouragement for young researchers.

Science solves carbon puzzleFeb 14, 2008
ANU oceanographer Andrew Hogg has debunked one of the last arguments against global warming: that surges in CO2 levels have lagged behind warming at the end of ice ages, and thus the warming seen today cannot be blamed on the burning of fossil fuels. Andrew has shown "The end of the ice age was triggered by orbital variations which increased temperature, but carbon dioxide amplified the size of the temperature variation by a factor of ten."
