Excellence Award for Research Management

Karen Jackson has been awarded an Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) Excellence Award. Karen accepted her award at an ARMS seminar on Tuesday 6 October 2009 at the ANU.
It is hard to believe that Karen has only been in the job for one year. In that time she has led and developed our Research Management Function. Research management is becoming increasingly intertwined with project management and can no longer be viewed simply as a specialised grants advice service. As the ANU positions itself for the future there is an increasing need for a self-support business focus, and the Joint Administration Group Research Management will play an important role in assisting College built external income.
Karen has shown great leadership during the Colleges Change Management process, which has involved a series of Working Parties and consultations to gather information and develop best practice processes. Through this process she has developed a platform that encourages colleagues from central Research Management; representatives from the academic and general staff and other administration functions to work together. The value of a forward looking, integrated service and the acknowledgement of results from its application under Karen's leadership has elevated the profession of research management at the ANU, and encouraged adoption of a graduate training module to ensure University research management staff are highly skilled.
We would like to congratulate Karen on her award and thank her for her wonderful contributions to research management across the Colleges.
