Symposium on 'Emerging Diseases: The Global Context'
The National Centre for Biosecurity, in collaboration with the John Curtin Medical School and the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health will hold a full day symposium addressing the theme ‘Emerging Infectious Diseases: The Global Perspective’.
Topics to be addressed include responses to the current H1N1 pandemic, the interface between HIV and tuberculosis, control of flaviviruses and other tropical diseases, the cost of biosecurity interventions and the role of uncertainty in disease control policy.
The symposium will be an excellent opportunity for researchers and policymakers to engage with a excellent range of invited speakers, including:- Prof. Martyn Jeggo, Director, Australian Animal Health Laboratories, CSIRO
- Prof. Ian Barr, Deputy Director, WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza
- Prof. Brian Kay, Australian Centre for International & Tropical Health, QIMR
- A.Prof. Roy Hall, Chemistry & Molecular Biosciences, UQ
- A/Prof. Leslee Roberts, National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health
- Prof. Mike Smithson, Department of Psychology, ANU
- Prof. Tom Kompas, Director, Australian Centre for Biosecurity and Environmental Economics, ANU
At the conclusion of the symposium a Public Lecture will be jointly delivered by Professor Tony McMichael and Professor John Mackenzie on the topic of ‘Climate Change and Global Health’.
