Solar thermal concentrators:
Capturing the sun for large scale power generation and energy export

An Australian Academy of Science public lecture in the series ‘Australia’s renewable energy future’

There has been a resurgence of activity in the construction of large scale concentrating solar thermal power plants in the last three years. This talk will review the trough, tower and dish concentrator technologies and will highlight various projects around the world. The new 500m2 generation II Big Dish under construction at ANU will be discussed and the possibilities for using such dish concentrators for driving chemical reactions to produce renewable fuels for export will be introduced.
