SYMPOSIUM

Evolution of the Universe, planets, life and thought

The Australian Academy of Science will be holding a symposium on Friday 8 May called ‘Evolution of the Universe, the planets, life and thought’ as part of the Academy’s peak annual event ‘Science at the Shine Dome’.

The symposium is a tribute to the inspiration provided by the work of two giants of science, Galileo and Darwin. This year is the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth; the 150th anniversary of the publication his landmark book, ‘The origin of species’; 400 years since Galileo founded modern astronomy by turning a telescope to the sky; and the International Year of Astronomy.

Topics will include:
  • Evidence for life in space
  • Evolution of behaviour
  • Creation of the Universe
  • Evolution of life on Earth
  • Evolution of the Laws of Physics
  • Evolution of reproduction
  • Dark energy
  • Extrasolar planets

International guests will include evolutionary biologist Olivia Judson (aka Dr Tatiana) from Imperial College, UK who appeared on Australian televisions in Dr Tatiana’s sex advice to all creation. She will be presenting on the evolution of reproduction in her presentation Glad to have evolved.

Professor Mike Turner from the University of Chicago will be discussing the Creation and evolution of the Universe: From before the big bang to the end of time.

Professor Euan Nisbet from the University of London will discuss Darwin the geologist: His relevance to 21st century Earth science.
