Career Achievement Awards


The annual ANU Staff Excellence Awards were held on Thursday November 13 2008. Of the four Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Career Achievement, three were awarded to staff members from the School of Physics and Engineering. Congratulations go to the following award recipients:

  • Laura Walmsley, Director’s Office - Laura has been an ANU staff member for 15 years and in that time has made significant contributions in a number of different roles. In particular, as Personal Assistant to the Director of the Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering, Ms Walmsley has shown exceptional organisational ability, demonstrated initiative and innovation and fostered a sense of inclusiveness and belonging within the School. She shows great commitment to ANU, fostering and nurturing the spirit of community both in her professional role and through her outreach activities.

  • Maryla Krolikowska, Laser Physics Centre - Maryla has been a member of the technical staff of the Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering since 1992 and during her distinguished career has demonstrated a strong and ongoing commitment to the University. She has provided exceptional service to the many research teams she has worked with and shown outstanding dedication to her role. Highly capable, reliable and self-motivated, Maryla has demonstrated commitment to professional development and training, developing a wide range of substantial new skills and initiating her own research. She has contributed considerable design input and technical innovation in a dynamic research group and held a strong supporting role to several major projects. Maryla is an inspirational role model who provides support and service to many staff and students.

  • Ken Staples, Stores Office - Ken has shown dedication, reliability and a high level of initiative and creativity during his career at ANU. Since joining the Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering Stores as a junior store person in 1980, he has achieved strong improvements in his area of work, risen through the ranks and taken on additional responsibilities. A well-organised and inspirational team leader with high level negotiating skills, Mr Staples has made invaluable contributions to reorganisation initiatives at the RSPhysSE Stores, resulting in considerable savings and efficiency increases. In addition, he continues to be proactive in supporting ANU recycling and waste management initiatives and in volunteering his services to staff and students, both in his work role and as a key contributor to social functions at the School.
