ARC funded PhD Scholarship in Seismology
$26,000
Closing Date for Applications: |
An exciting opportunity exists at the Research School of Earth
Sciences (Australian National University) for an individual with
appropriate undergraduate qualifications to take part in frontier
seismic research aimed at better understanding the internal structure of the Earth.
A PhD student position in Seismology is now available at the Research School of Earth Sciences at the Australian National University.
Applications and inquiries are invited from highly-qualified and
motivated students wishing to pursue a PhD degree in seismology.
Successful applicants will be joining a group of seismologists with
interests in various aspects of global and regional seismology (both
observational and theoretical) and computational geophysics, studying both Earth structure and seismic sources. For example, opportunities exist in exploiting large volumes of passive data recorded by a rolling array to improve seismic images of the Australian lithosphere and deep Earth structure, and participating in the deployment of broadband transects across various parts of Australia and consequent structural interpretation.
In addition to a PhD stipend (approximately AUS$26,000 pa, nominally tax free), funds for a new computer and travel to national and international conferences will be provided.

Closing Date for Applications: |
An exciting opportunity is available in the area of pharmacogenomics at the John Curtin School of Medical Research. The goal of this line of work is to conduct translational research aimed at elucidating molecular and genomic mechanisms that underlie drug action. The key question to be addressed is: "How is variability in therapeutic outcomes determined by genetic substrate?" Genes control drug metabolism, drug transport, disease susceptibility, and drug targets. The aim of the pharmacogenomics PhD studentship is therefore to conduct studies that elucidate the effects of genomic variation on outcomes relevant to drug response, particularly in psychiatric disorders. The student will learn key relevant topics in this area such as understanding the biology of candidate genes and pathways, the relationship of disease genes to drug response genes, defining drug response phenotypes, and addressing ethical, technical, and data analyses issues related to the establishment and management of large drug response data sets.

Immune and endocrine mediators modulate the effects of the environment on key outcomes such as stress response, depression and obesity. The aim of the psychoneuroimmunology PhD studentship is to elucidate the specific mechanisms and pathways by which immune and endocrine molecules are regulated by the environment and then signal the brain and other organs to cause disease-related outcomes. The student will learn key relevant topics in this area such as understanding the interactions between the immune and central nervous systems and will learn methods and techniques relevant to immunology, neuroscience and to models of disease, such as obesity and depression.
